Greece: The separation of church and state

The head of the Greek church died on Monday and today (Thursday) is being buried. The Greek government declared January 31st, the day of the archbishop's funeral, an official holiday for Greek public services.

On a lighter note, school kids are smiling because they got an extra day off (yesterday was the religious school holiday of Trion Ierarhon, patrons of learning and students). However, on a very serious note... Huh? What does the death of a religious leader have to do with public services Greek taxpayers -regardless of faith- pay for?

Greek Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs. That's how close knit the church and state are. The state religion has its own ministry. Don't even get me started on how public schools are obligated to teach Greek Orthodoxy from grade 1 to the very last year of high school (lykeio). There is -of course- one year in high school that introduces the "other" religions always within the prism of how they compare (not) to Greek Orthodox doctrine. You could request that your child not attend the lesson of "Religion" IF you can prove you're of another doctrine or atheist. If you're unlucky and chance on a hyper-religious educator and principal, then your kid is screwed. So, for the sake of your child's sanity you opt for him/her to attend the course.

Hypocritical? You bet. But wait, there's more.

Most Greeks keep on keeping on the religion, NOT because they actually believe BUT because it is easier to get things done with the state. It is no secret that those who haven't been baptized (my children) or married in the Greek Orthodox Church (Husband and me) have a bitch of a day when it comes to settling bureaucratic issues with the Greek state.

Luckily, however, the times they are a-changin', and as a member of the EU, Greece is obligated to adopt European directives; one of those being that authorities finally got rid of the religious status from identity cards and other official papers. The late archbishop had waged a fierce war against this measure and in one of his public, mass rallies is quoted: "They [the government] are trying to take away our society's Christian and Orthodox identity, using various groundless arguments, because they hate God and want to marginalize the Church."

Hate. Tsk, tsk. Strong verb for a church that has discriminated against those who were not Orthodox, including Catholics and worshipers of other branches of Christianity, subconsciously scarring simple church folk to believe that anyone different (race or color) is bad, or at least not as good as Greek Orthodox.

Greece is one of the few remaining state religions in the world and as a citizen of Greece I'm not proud of this. I respect every man's and woman's right to believe OR not in ANY or NO creed of their choice. I object, HOWEVER, that just because I'm born into a particular country I have to be held hostage to a particular faith.

This post was inspired by the following e-mail and post that made its way around the Greek Internet and blogosphere:

THE EMPLOYEES OF MUNICIPALITY OF RACHES IKARIA REFERRING TO NO.5811/29-1-08 DOCUMENT OF YP.ES.D.D.A. p.s. It is not a prank. People called the Municipality and the employees had indeed gone in for work as usual and joked that all the calls they had gotten today kept them from actually working.

Easy come, easy go

This morning the subway ticket machine gave me back an extra 50 cents by mistake. On the train platform, a man asking for money approached.
The free 50 cents had found its true owner.

#36 Feel-good Flick for Friday

Husband went to the dentist's today. Got an old tooth root yanked out and came home with an eye patch because the anesthesia affected his eye nerves. Hence today's choice.

Fancy baby talk

Last night as I was leaving from my brother's and sister-in-law's home, I waved good bye to my one-year old nephew: "Feygo" (Greek for "I'm leaving").
And that adorable lump of little man reciprocated with enthusiastic waving and what sounded a lot like "Feygeis?" (Leaving?)

My sister-in-law and I stopped dead in our tracks and locked disbelieving stares, "Didja hear what I heard?"
So far, he says "papa", "mmmmmm" instead of mama (breaking my sister-in-law's heart), and a lot of incoherent baby talk with a side dish of baby drool.

Is it possible MY nephew is already conjugating verbs in question form?

Italians vs. Europeans by Bruno Bozzetto
Replace the Italian flag with the Greek one and it's almost as if Italians and Greeks are identical twins separated at birth. Must be something in the water (Mediterranean)...

Every day is poker night for dust-bunnies at my home

Self-portrait of an artist tracking down dust-bunnies

No matter how hard I try to balance a job, a family and a household, the infidels known as dust bunnies have a way of breaking my spirit and rendering all my house-keeping efforts useless.

Enigmatically, the sound of the doorbell seems to call this grey stuff out of its hiding, like a voodoo chant that arouses zombies from their crypts.

I bite my lip to control the gasp let loose by that annoying conventional housewife in me (who, by the way, refuses to just shut up - die - leave me in peace). I cringe at the thought my visitor may witness "The Fluff", that peeps out from behind furniture legs and then ...THEN... has the audacity to casually drift across the living room floor like a wind-swept sagebrush/prop from a spaghetti Western. [insert background music of OST "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"]

I cringe and wordlessly repeat my "please don't look down" mantra, hoping visitor's brain waves will unconsciously obey. By the time I maneuver myself near enough to stomp on dust-bunny and avoid the embarrassment of the moment, it has disappeared again!

Aaaargh! I have no idea where this STUFF comes from, how they form, who their leader is. They obviously retreat to an underground refuge colony while I vacuum and are trained to appear only before house guests.

They are mocking me. I need to find their clandestine hide-out before they evolve, multiply and start grabbing my guests' ankles, yelping what a terrible house cleaner I am.

Die-hard Christmas spirit or just plain lazy?

Someone please look at the calendar. That's right. The eighth of January. So why do I still see Christmas decorations and energy-sucking lights dangling around? Huh? Let it go people. It's over. Get off your lazy bums and start packing them trees and lights back in their boxes for next year's Christmas. Santa has left the building, gone home to the melting Pole.

How would you react if you were snorkeling and saw this right below you?

British sculptor/diver James deCaires Taylor (www.underwatersculpture.com) has created a series of beautiful, yet eerie, underwater sculptures located in Grenada, West Indies. These subaqueous works of art are designed to create artificial reefs allowing natural reefs a greater chance to repair and to regenerate.

I particularly liked the "Lost Correspondent" (man sitting at typewriter). Credits for me finding out Taylor's astonishing underwater sculptures go to Bernard's Glyptothiki.
