Happy sysadmin day

The last Friday of every July is System Administrator Appreciation Day. You don't have to shower us with gifts. A day free of stupid, whiny, smart ass remarks will be enough.

Italian bloggers: We do not want to be gagged!
Today, July 14, 2009, Italian bloggers are on strike against legislation to gag the italian Internet.
The following English statement of the first ever blogosphere strike from dirittoallarete.ning.com
It will be the first strike of bloggers ever.
On July 14, 2009, Italian bloggers will muzzle themselves in the Web as well as in Piazza Navona in Rome, at 7PM where they will meet to protest against an Italian government bill (the Alfano decree) introducing a number of new rules which will limit the freedom of expression in Italian internet.
The so-called "obligation to rectify" imposed to the manager of an information site (blogs, social networks such as Facebook, Twitter etc) clearly appears to be a pretext. In fact such imposition, in terms of bureaucratization of the network and of very heavy penalties for users, shall make of the new decree an internet-killer.
The practical effects shall be to cause the independent sites and blogs to cease or materially reduce their publications. The apparent intent of introducing criteria of responsibility hides the attempt to make life difficult or impossible for bloggers and users of shared sites (for example: You Tube...)
The fact is that bloggers are already entirely liable, from a penal standpoint, in the event of crimes such as insults, defamation etc: there is no need to introduce unbearable penalties for "citizen-journalists" who do not intend to submit themselves to the bureaucracy and the burdens contemplated in the Alfano decree.
The plurality of information, regardless of the media, internet, newspapers, radio and tv networks etc, is a fundamental right of men and citizens, on which democracy and freedom are based. The Alfano decree is an attack to the freedom of all media, from the major newspapers to the smallest blog.
For this reason we invite all Italian blogs and sites to a day of silence, in the day in which newspapers and tv networks will also remain silent. It is a message of all operators in the media world, who jointly shout to the political world: "we don not want to be gagged". We therefore invite all citizens with a blog or a site to publish this logo and maintain it for the entire day of July 14 next.
Defending the press, the tv and radio networks, the journalists and the Web, we firmly defend the basic freedom of information and the future of our democracy.

T for Thank you!
It's an honor getting an award and even more so if it comes from a blog like "This Is Not My Country" because DeviousDiva tackles some very important issues that keeps Greeks on their toes and the world informed. Thanks for the cyberspace award and the inspiration to keep paddling my way along the blogosphere.I would like to pass it around some of the most inspiring blogs on my blogroll and pay it forward:
- V-grrrl, for her exceptionally creative writing
- Glyptothiki, for his dedication to presenting one of the most complete on line collections of Athens public sculptures and their creators
- Arkoudos, for his insightful photoshops and concise posts on contemporary life in Greece
Microblogging
Sometimes I don't have a whole lot to blog about and sometimes I do. When I do, this is my main cyberspace nook. However, most of the times I only have scattered thoughts or interesting links that don't warrant an entire blog post. That's why I also created my "micro blog" at flubberwinkle.tumblr.com and I invite you to stop by. You can pick up the rss for my tmblr updates.

When Everyone Is A Blogger, Nothing You Say Is Off The Record
There's a lot of buzz here in the Belgian blogosphere and mainstream media about an incident involving a New York-based blogger, who was fired from her job as a bartender after publishing a post on the bar visit of a Belgian politician. continue reading "When Everyone Is A Blogger, Nothing You Say Is Off The Record"

Being a network admin #2
Got a call from a new and young network computer user who has recently been assigned a brand new, shiny PC with a flat screen with speakers. He has that 'know-it-all computer' attitude that I've come across many a time from users in my 20 year stint as self-made computer geek.
"I can't hear very well from the PC".
Afraid I might insult him -power user that he has led me to believe he is- if I ask the obvious question of whether the speakers were turned on, I inquire if there is ANY sound coming from the speakers.
He replies "only a little".
"Look", I answer, frustrated and assuming that most young people just want to get the most out of their itunes at work, "if you need a better set of speakers, you might need to buy them yourself. The speakers are decent enough for regular office use. Our department won't order separate speakers".
"Oh no, I understand... but, I can HARDLY hear anything".
"That's really strange. I'll be up there to see for myself".
I go into his office. He's a courteous young man and immediately offers me his seat so I can inspect the problem.
"No need", I reply. He has a youtube movie playing on the screen but NO sound is coming from anywhere because...
he hadn't opened the power switch for the speakers.
His young cheeks turn violet red as I turn the knob that is on the screen, labeled "power". The music from the video blares as I adjust the volume from the same knob.
I didn't mean to add to his embarrassment but curiosity got the best of me: "You know what threw me off track? You said that you couldn't hear it VERY WELL and I assumed the sound was muffled or the sound card was below your standards. That's why I suggested a better set of speakers! What WERE you listening to?"
He shrugged a bashful smile.
Moral of the story.
Always ask the stupid question first: "Is the power switch on?"

At work they call me by my given name, Athena or more commonly known as "Athenaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa help".
I could write a book with the various problems my network computer users have called me to help them.
Today, for example, a frantic user called me to complain that when she pushed the power button on her computer it started beeping.
I raised a worried eyebrow and inwardly groaned at the idea of a potential hardware conflict issue on the motherboard. Got my butt up and headed for personal inspection.
She was standing at the door of her office, pressing her hands together in fret "I just pressed the button!", "Do you think it's serious?", "Is my computer sick?".
I went to the computer, heard it beeping and...
removed the corner of a heavy folder that was pressing against the 'esc key' on the left corner of the keyboard.
Beeping stopped. Problem solved. Co-worker blushed shamefaced.

Because I don't spend enough time on the Internet
...I signed up for (Inter)National Blog Posting Month. The only requirement is that I blog every day for the month of November. That's 30 consecutive days.
Did I hear someone in the back groaning, Internet? Yes [nod-nod], that means I will probably be posting more memes to compensate for my extended blogger's block. Unless, of course, the stress of finding something to post about every. single. day. for a whole month kick starts my creative writing juices and I finally indite something flubberwinkle-blog worthy.

Postcard before I leave
Dear Internet,
Before I leave you for my two week summer vacation, I want to apologize for not posting more during August but then I noticed YOU didn't post a heck of a whole lot this month either so we are both guilt free and even. In my quest to improve my blog I submitted my URL for some feedback at Bloggy Award and they gave me a really decent review. I need to work on my blog's usefulness, so get ready for recipes, computer tips and maybe even, crafts this winter.
Be well, do good!

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2008 when...
1. You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.
2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.
3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.
4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.
5. Your reason for n ot staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.
6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.
7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen
8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.
10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.
11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. :)
12. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.
13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.
14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.
15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list.

May 15th is "Bloggers Unite For Human Rights"
"Bloggers Unite For Human Rights
While the words might change from country to country and are sometimes taken for granted, human rights represent one of the universally agreed upon ideas - that all people are born with basic rights and freedoms that include life, liberty, and justice. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations.
Bloggers Unite for Human Rights challenges bloggers everywhere to help elevate human rights by drawing attention to the challenges and successes of human rights issues on May 15. What those topics may include - the wrongful imprisonment of journalists covering assemblies, governments that ignore the plight of citizens, and censorship of the Internet. What is important is that on one day, thousands of bloggers unite and share their unified support of human rights everywhere."
